Where Most Investors Fear to Tread, Breakout Labs Funds

Peter Thiel recently invested in three biotech startups through Breakout Labs, his nonprofit fund aimed at scientific innovation:

  • Cortexyme, a San Francisco business seeking treatments for Alzheimer’s and other aging disorders
  • G-Tech Medical of Palo Alto, is working on a wireless, wearable sensor that will track muscle activity in a person’s gastrointestinal system
  • EpiBone, a New York company that engineers a patient’s own living bone to fit where there’s a defect

The fund is led by Executive Director Lindy Fishburne and has now invested in 19 companies:

“Breakout Labs invests in startups mostly led by teams of academics, including PhDs and research scientists. It also helps universities make money through tech transfer (or university-owned intellectual property)…Its portfolio companies are ambitious in their plans to advance human health, and dramatically improve life on earth with concepts seemingly lifted from science fiction.”
